Perennial Grasses

Nick's carries thousands of species and varieties of plants suited for our climate including many difficult to find items. Below or only SOME of the more popular selections.

Hardy Pampas Grass

  • Hardy Pampas Grass – The largest of the perennial grasses Hardy Pampas grass can shoot feathery plumes to 12’ tall. It is drought tolerant and an excellent specimen plant for a natural look.

‘Karl Foerster’ Feather Reed Grass

  • Karl Foerster’ Feather Reed Grass – The single most popular perennial grass seen frequently in commercial landscapes in mass plantings. This grass grows in a neat 3-4’ tall column producing wheat-like plumes in the late summer and fall. Waiting to cut the grass back until spring will provide nice winter accents as well.

maidengrass

  • Maiden Grass – Many varieties of Maiden Grass exist to offer different vase shaped sizes for different locations, ranging from 3-4’ tall to 6-7’ tall. Several varieties can offer a reddish color in the fall or splashes or yellow variegated color.

Blue Oat

  • Blue Oat Grass – A very drought tolerant smaller grass only growing about 2’ tall and wide. As its name suggest the foliage is a constant light blue sporting tan plumes in the fall.

Blue Fescue

  • Blue Fescue – A smaller grass with similar habits as the Blue Oat Grass but only growing around 12” tall and wide. The intense blue mounds add excellent color contrast and fit into almost any landscape design.

Hamlin Grass

  • Hamlin Grass – A dense fine leafed green grass grows to 2’ tall and wide. Producing tan fluffy foxtail like plumes in all directions. A great addition for texture contrast in perennial or rock garden

Purple Fountain Grass

  • Purple Fountain Grass - THIS GRASS IS NOT A PERENNIAL IN COLORADO. This means it won’t come back every year. Cry We know we love it too and of course WE DO SELL IT, by the truck load. But it is not hardy enough to withstand our winters, despite what the plant tag or Home Depot says. This does not mean you shouldn’t buy it. On the contrary, it will still give you amazing color and is great for pots. It grows VERY fast and will fill out well by the end of the growing season. It’s size will greatly depend on how much room it has to grow and what size you bought it at, but in general mature size for this annual grass is 2-3’ tall and 2’ wide.

Japanese Blood Grass

  • Japanese Blood Grass – Unfortunately this one we do not sell anymore, nor does any nursery in Colorado as of 2011. It has been listed as a noxious weed and is against the law to sell or plant or propagate in this state.
